Welcome to Heidi J Cox's Running Blog

Hi Runners New, Old and Aspiring to Be!

Join us as we learn, inspire and have fun in our chosen sport of running. I look forward to your contributions and suggestions.

25 years ago I was the top female runner in my high school. I began to run again for the first time last year since I'd never entered an adult race. In 2009 I ran my first two half marathons.

My goal is to successfully complete the Marine Corps Marathon this October 2010. I've come a long way, learned a great deal and have a long way to go. Join me on my journey and that we can inspire each other as we reach our goals. Happy Running! Heidi J Cox

41 Days till MCM

One year and a half ago I made a commitment to myself that I would run the Marine Corps Marathon. I had not run in over 25 years, at all.

Today it is 41 days until I will be running that race.

Yes, I am a little anxious but I have been training, mentally and physically for several months. This is really a story about making a commitment to yourself and following through on it. It means doing what it takes to make that commitment, that dream, that goal ---making it happen.

It all started with a dream and then a short run around the block.

Happy running!

A Change of Scenery-Simple

It can get boring and it is easy to get into the same habits. I made a change this week. For the first time in a year and a half, I ran at a very different time of day. I ran this week once at 6pm. It was cool enough and I planned for it with my eating. It was great. So, change at times, can be good for you!

Sunday is another long run, 20 miles. That will be my longest run yet. I'll report back. How do you like the new design on the site?

Happy Running! Weather is getting cooler here so it really is happy!

Running on the Beach :}

I never thought I was one of those crazy people who run on the beach until this past weekend! I had 19 miles to run for my MCM training and we were at VA Beach for the weekend. In order to get it done in the least painful way possible, I decided to run along the boardwalk and then later on the beach. It was beautiful and interesting. I highly recommend it.

I am one of those rare people who does not run with headphones. So, the environment is important to me. The VA Beach Boardwalk is full of interesting people so the time passed quite well. The sound of the water was calming. When I ran along the water in the harder sand, it was cool and peaceful.

You may think to yourself that you can't do something but if you set your mind to it, you will.

Happy Running! I'll post a picture of VA Beach on the site.

Make Your Running a Priority and Make Yourself a Priority

"I definitely make running a priority. That's not always possible, but my office knows that it goes first on the list."

Dr. Jill Biden, Second lady and college professor

It's 5:45am and I'm preparing to go out and run this am. It's not always easy but most days I make time to get in my runs. After I have completed my run, I always feel better about myself and I'm glad I made it a priority.

We all know the benefits of exercise. It is easy, especially as a mom, to cut out those things that don't fit well into your schedule, that aren't for someone else. Don't do it. For the little time you take for yourself to stay healthly and have some free mental time, it will add to the other parts of your day and your life.
