Welcome to Heidi J Cox's Running Blog

Hi Runners New, Old and Aspiring to Be!

Join us as we learn, inspire and have fun in our chosen sport of running. I look forward to your contributions and suggestions.

25 years ago I was the top female runner in my high school. I began to run again for the first time last year since I'd never entered an adult race. In 2009 I ran my first two half marathons.

My goal is to successfully complete the Marine Corps Marathon this October 2010. I've come a long way, learned a great deal and have a long way to go. Join me on my journey and that we can inspire each other as we reach our goals. Happy Running! Heidi J Cox

Consistency Part Two

In my last post I wrote about the importance of being consistent in your running. The best way to do this is to plan ahead a bit and be creative.

For example, I looked ahead at my weekend and couldn't find a time to run my long run, 14 miles. After spending some time I came up with a creative solution. I'll be getting up at 5:30am tomorrow to run for my 14 miles. The solution was to work around my family's schedule and run at a time of day that is reasonable for my health. Given that it will be 90 degrees tomorrow, this sounds like a plan.

It may take some creativity to fit running into your life but if you do, you will find that you'll miss it when you don't and you'll be glad when you do.

Several years ago when I ran in high school, I performed quite well but I never really enjoyed the actual sport of running. When I began to run again a year ago, twenty-five years later, I still found running to be boring. A few months ago, I realized that something had changed and I am actually enjoying running. Maybe it has grown on me, maybe I am taking better care of my body, maybe I enjoy the time to myself or all of the above.

I wish the same to everyone else. Running is a sport that requires very little of other people yet it does require a commitment from yourself.

Go out and enjoy it!
